April 13 13. It was Kari's special birthday party and a heck of a night to party! Thank you to all of our friends and family that came out to hang out with us once again. Some we haven't seen in ages, some are just too loyal for words, and some of you just became friends that night. Love it! Catch you back at the King's Head on Friday, May 10th.
March 15th at the King's Head was full of great sing-a-longs and fancy dancin'! Thanks to Dave Hill for playing bass for us. Another great one!
We had the pleasure of playing at the Dreams Take Flight social at Canad Inns Polo Park on Saturday, March 9th. Joining the usual member of the band for the evening's live music portion was Jeff McMaster on piano. Thank you to all of our friends that came out to support this wonderful cause. Congratulations to the event's organizers for a job well done. Good luck with the flight in April!
So this guy borrowed Yvonne's tambourine and put it back on stage on top of a wine glass. The glass shattered and cut his hands! Nasty. Then another guy took Yvonne's other tambourine, played it on his hip and busted it into pieces. Another epic night at the King's Head Pub last Saturday, February 9th. What a show! What a crowd! Let's do it again. How about on March 15th?
Highway 59 had the pleasure of playing a corporate event at the Hotel Fort Garry on Saturday - January 19, 2013. Thank you to Keith Lalman for doing the sound for us. Perfect as usual. The band added a couple of new tunes to the mix - Angel of the Morning and another lead vocal tune for Gary, Sharp Dressed Man. We'll try them out again at the King's Head on February 9th, so come on out and give them a listen!
Thank you to everyone that came out to the King's Head Pub on Saturday, December 15th. There were some very interesting characters - the Nordic boys from Halifax, the couple from Lisbon, North Dakota, the speaker dancer. Never a dull moment! The band enjoyed getting into the spirit of the season with a rockin' rendition of Run Run Rudolph, made more fun with Darryl's very realistic Santa hat and beard! Cheers to everyone at the King's Head for letting us play longer than - well, overtime once again. Happy Holidays from Highway 59! Cheers to a fabulous new year!
It was time for a Friday night show at the King's Head - November 23rd to be exact. Drummer Dave brought out his alter ego, Coach Dave, while hosting both of his sons' hockey teams at the Puck 'n Eat Your Dinner fundraising event. Thanks to Dave Hill for playing the bass guitar and to his wife, Karen, and her declaration that she could have danced all night!
Saturday, October 20th at the King's Head Pub was incredibly fantastic. Thank you to all that came out to rock with us! The crowd was flying and the energy was pulsating! Never have there been so many people dancing on top of chairs and tables. Happy birthday greetings to Lisa Carriere who came out to celebrate with her friends and show off her tambourine skills. The band debuted its new tune, She Sells Sanctuary, which we pleasantly pulled off. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again on Friday, November 23rd.
Played at the Hitch 'n Post in Grosse Isle, MB on Saturday, October 13th. We had the privilege of showcasing the talents of Jeff McMaster on keyboards during the country themed event (yes - we learned some new country tunes!). Extra thanks out to Kevin Tillberg and Keith Lalman for making us look and sound so great. ROCK on!
Nights on Broadway! Happy 50th birthday to Karl! H59 was honoured to play at this special birthday celebration held on Saturday, September 29th. The Club Room at the Hotel Fort Garry was the scene. George MacKenzie opened the night with his beautiful piano stylings. Friends and family were surprised at Karl's fine rendition of "Man on the Moon"! Well done, Karl! The band played, by special request from the birthday boy's wife, U2's "One". Thanks again to Trent Simpson and Dave Hill for helping us out filling in on drums and bass.
Epic. That is how David Christianson described our night at the King's Head Pub on Friday, September 21st. The dance floor never stopped bouncing from the first tune on. Great to see both new and familiar faces in the crowd. Thank you to Andres Sinnaeve and that great singer from Cape Breton Island that took to the microphones and hit it for "Born to be Wild". Epic.

The band had the privilege of being invited back to the King acreage to perform during the 2nd annual Fun in a Bun, Thursday, September 20th. This fundraiser put on by George Andrews and JP Parenty is one of a kind! A local and fortunate charity, The Movement Centre of Manitoba, is the recipient of the funds raised at this event. The band would like to thank Trent Simpson and Jeff McMaster to helping us out by playing with us in Gary and Dave's absence. Besides the hosts, the band would also like to that Bruce and Louise King for their kind hospitality.
Harley-Davidson Winnipeg Open House on Saturday, September 15th marked our first time playing at this function. What an amazing day! Congratulations to Sheryl and David or HD-Winnipeg on Niakwa Road off Fermor near Lagimodiere. Congratulations also to the winners of the show and shine motorcycle AND car divisions. Hope to see you again next year!
Another great time at the King's Head Pub this past Saturday, August 11th. The crowd was rocking and the band fed into the frenzie by debuting our rendition of Foghat's "I Just Want to Make Love to You". It was excellent! A special thank you to Dave Hill for taking on the very important role of "bass player" for the show. Your hard work and talent shined! Also - thank you so much to all of our friends that came out to show their support. You made our night! See you back at the King's Head on September 21st.
Highway 59 was pleased to share in the special day of Shawn Kehoe and Meghan Mawhinney as they tied the knot on Saturday, July 14th. Thank you to Keith Lalman for doing the sound for us and to Kevin Tillberg for setting up and operating the stage lighting. It looked and sounded amazing! We had a few special guests show up on stage with us but it was an impromptu chorus from Winnipeg's own Canadian Idol finalist, Lisa Bell, that really caught their attention. Congratulations, Shawn and Meghan!
The Platinum Jets Annual Golf Tournament took place on Friday, July 13th and H59 was there entertaining the players at the 9th hole. It was a steaming hot day but there was no stopping this successful event from raising funds for local causes. Thanks for making this, our third year at your event, a memorable one! Special thanks to Dave for the tip at the end of the day. What a great surprise!
Thank you to all of the people that started off their July long weekend with us at the King's Head Pub on Friday, June 29th! Perri and the Morris gang and the other great folks in all of the VIP sections out there kept the night hopping. A special thank you to Trent Simpson for keeping that beat for us once again. See you back at the King's Head on Saturday, August 11th!
Our first "back-to-back" shows in quite a while, we played the River City Dragon Boat Festival on Friday, June 8th and the Saint Paul's High School's "Lobster for Others" Surf & Turf Event on Saturday, June 9th. Congratulations to organizers of both of these events. Weather kept us indoors at Saint Paul's, but the spirit was still alive and well in Murray Hall. Fresh lobster flown in from Nova Scotia and actually caught by one of the organizers, Darlene Braschuk's father and brother! A special thank you to Terry Garraway for helping us out on bass guitar both on June 1st at the King's Head and again at Saint Paul's. You were great! One more thing - same sound guy both events. Thanks to Eric Kinsman of Audio Works for making us sound so good!
May 26th and June 1st - less than a week apart - at the King's Head Pub! Gotta love it. We rang in Darryl's birthday at midnight at the May 26th show and then celebrated the King's Head sound guy, Cam Younger's birthday on June 1st. There was even a wedding party (congrats Janet and Steve!) celebrating on June 1st! See you back at the King's Head on June 29th!
Ahhhh. May Long. Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Northern Harbour Marina in Kenora. Great people, great lobster, great people! The band would like to send a big, fat THANK YOU to Gary and Barb for booking us, and to Trent Simpson for sharing his talents on the drums for the show. We had a blast and a half! See you in September.....
Friday, April 20, 2012 marked another Highway 59 night at the King's Head Pub. We feel very fortunate to be on a monthly rotation! Thank you, Cam. If you weren't able to attend, I'm sorry to say that you missed another fabulous night! The dance floor was packed. The fun crowd was singing along to every song. The band was flying. Don't worry - we're back again on Saturday, May 26th. No excuses this time!
Highway 59 had the pleasure of representing the Classic Rock genre at the 2nd annual Move 'N Groove-a-Thon on Saturday, April 14th, 2012. The genre was the last of seven bands that played throughout the 12-hour dance relay in support of our good friends at The Movement Centre of Manitoba. A whopping $135,000 was raised at the event! Thank you to all of our fans that came out to support us and the cause!
Another great night at the King's head Pub last night, Friday, March 23rd. The energy in the room was super contagious! Thank you to all of our friends and fans that came out to support the band. You are the BEST! If anyone got David Christianson's bass guitar stomach dive onto the monitor, please post on You Tube and send us the link! Great one for the collection.
So... we played at the King's Head Pub on Saturday, February 4th. There was a Pint, Perogy, and Pepper Steak fundraising dinner before the band started and it was Drummer Dave's son's hockey team putting on the dinner. The room was already packed, but then bring in as many people as you can possibly justify to the various "commissions" and you have one steaming hot fabulous night! Cam Younger was kind enough to put the microphones back on the cables so we could do just one more encore. Thank you to David Christianson for steering the bass guitar helm once again. Great to see all of our new (and dare I say "young") fans at the King's Head. See you again soon!
New Year's Eve 2012 at Doubles, Travelodge Winnipeg East was once again, hopping great fun. Thanks to Gloria Piper and the fabulous staff at the hotel. A shout out to the spirited revellers that kept the dance floor packed all night. A special thank you to Keith Lalman on bass guitar and Tom Palmer on drums. On behalf of Darryl, Gary, Yvonne, and Dave, we wish each and every one of you a HEALTHY, happy, and prosperous 2012!
Another first for the band - a set at the West End Cultural Centre on Friday, December 9th! It was Carly Kuppers and Geoff Thompson's wedding social and we had the privilege of being invited to perform to satisfy the tastes of the over 30 crowd. Okay - the over 40 crowd, but the under 40 crowd liked us too! Thanks out to David Christianson for holding down the bass for us at this fine event. Congratulations, Carly and Geoff!
It is with profound sadness that we pass along to you the news of the untimely passing of our friend and bandmate, bass player Mike Hesford on Monday, November 28, 2011. On behalf of the band, we will deeply miss Mike and all of his many contributions to our lives and to our musical endeavours. Our love to Perri and the boys.
We had a fabulous time rocking it out at La Scala on Corydon last Saturday night, November 12th. Congratulations to Crystal and Karen for pulling off a total surprise party for the birthday boys, Ken and Dan! Here's a great note from Karen: "Hello Darryl, Gary, Hal, Mike and Yvonne: I just wanted to send you an email to say thank you so much for Saturday night. Dan and Ken had an excellent 50th Birthday celebration and Highway 59 was certainly a large part of the reason why. You guys were great!!!! You received many compliments from our friends and I will be sure to pass your information on to anyone who is planning an event and would love to have live music. Thanks again Highway 59!!!! We loved having you!!! Karen and Dan Taylor Oakville ON"
We finally made it! We played the MTS Centre! Okay, it was during Winnipeg Harvest's Empty Bowls Soup-er Lunch on November 1, 2011, but we did it. We were actually there to promote the 2nd Annual Move 'N Groove-a-Thon being held on April 14, 2012 at the Red River Exhibition Place. It's not too early to get your dance team together and groove for a cause. All proceeds to our friends at The Movement Centre of Manitoba to educate about, well, Conductive Education.
Happy Birthday, Diane! On Saturday, October 15th, we were once again taken outside of the Perimeter Hwy. just off Hwy.44 to help Les surprise his wonderful wife, Diane, on her special milestone birthday. The joint was jumping from the first song and it had nothing to do with Les's well prepared speech going a tad overtime. Here's what Les & Diane had to say: "Thanks again for the incredible entertainment!!! You guys were awesome, and everyone couldn't believe the incredible band we had!!!! Many asked for your name, and a few for contact, and I said to go to your website!! Again...thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!"
Friday, September 16th at Northern Harbour Marina in Kenora was going to be hit or miss according to the organizers. Owners Gary and Barb were not sure how many people would show up for the season wind up. A sprinkle of people here and there and then WHAM! A full house of people rocking it out full tilt. Thanks to Gary and Barb for allowing us to be a part of this great night, to David Christianson for playing bass with H59 and sharing his passion with us, to Hal "BamBam" Ryckman for filling in for Dave, and to all the fine people of Northern Harbour that continue to make us feel like the most sought after rock stars! The band would like to give special thanks to David and is wife Vera for hosting us while at the harbour. You're the best!
There was more than just Fun in a Bun on Thursday, September 15th. There was fun by the bonfire and under the tent, too! Congratulations to organizers JP Parenty and George Andrews and venue hosts Bruce and Louise King for a very successful evening. Congratulations also goes out to The Movement Centre of Manitoba and Executive Director, Margy Nelson, the recipient of the event's proceeds. The work you do is amazing and more and more Winnipegers are becoming aware of your centre - keep up the great efforts to tell the world about Conductive Education.
Saturday, August 27th was spent in Balmoral MB, just outside of Stonewall. H59 had the honour of providing rocking entertainment for Allan Goudy's special birthday extravaganza. The outdoor stage provided the perfect spot for us to enjoy the roaring bonfire and roaring crowd! A shout out to Stephanie (Steff) for treating us all to her rendition of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and to Heather for her "You've Got a Friend" toast to the host. Also, a special thank you to Keith Lalman for sharing his talents on the lead guitar for the evening. A fabulous time was had by all. Happy 50th Birthday, Al!
The Manitoba Stampede and Rodeo was another huge success and H59 had an opportunity to perform for three evenings during the 2011 event! We hit the Rempel Insurance Outdoor Stage for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Thanks to our bass player, Mike Hesford, our Morris connection, and the fabulous Perri for hosting the band over the weekend. A great time was had by all. A special shout out to Brad of Audio Works for a great job on the sound the entire weekend. The band would also like to thank Norm at the Beer Garden for making sure we had water and laughs!
